The Department of Religious Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, invites applications for a lecturer position to begin in August 2024. Candidates with expertise in Islam or Judaism are encouraged to apply, and the successful candidate will contribute to some of the department’s curricular strengths in religion, race, gender, sexuality, health, and social change.
As a department, we encourage the public, fellow scholars, and our students to think differently about religion, specifically regarding how religion plays out in day-to-day life outside institutional walls, by engaging with community partners and to be conscious consumers of culture and participants in civil society.
The lecturer will join an interdisciplinary department whose faculty are committed to advancing academic understandings of how religion informs and shapes public life. There are opportunities for growth and support in the position including shaping the undergraduate core curriculum and developing lower division courses and graduate classes; for university-level teaching fellowships and grants through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Online Education; for developing leadership in instructional innovation through applied learning, department, and university wide mentoring; and for earning successivepromotion to the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Senior Lecturer.
Position Description
We invite applications from candidates with demonstrated dedication to teaching and a commitment to pedagogical research and innovation. Candidates need to be prepared to teach about religious traditions in a public institution with an applied focus. The lecturer will normally teach a 4-4 schedule in the academic year with the option of teaching additional summer classes. Lecturers’ overall effort divides between teaching (80%) and service (20%).
