Sabrina Thomas is a junior majoring in Religious Studies. She recently presented her work, "Rehumanization Through Education: Roma Revived," at the 2023 GSU Undergraduate Research Conference. In this interview, we chat more with Sabrina about her research interests and her experience in the Religious Studies Department thus far.
Please introduce yourself!
My name is Sabrina Thomas, I am an undergrad studying religious studies and global studies. I just finished my junior year and plan to graduate in the spring of 2024! I particularly love studying comparative religion and contrasting different philosophies from different religions.
What has been your most memorable experience in the religious studies department at GSU thus far?
For one of my religion classes, we took a field trip to the Oakland Cemetary to discuss traditional American death culture. Examining one of Atlanta’s most unique places through a religious lens was fascinating. Whenever I visit, I love to point out this information to friends!
What is something useful you’ve learned from your time in the BA program in religious studies thus far?
How connected religion is to everything. Religion is the root of human culture and society, and so many disciplines have evolved from religion. Whenever I take a class outside the religion department, I have a unique perspective that brings new insight to the classroom.
What are your future plans?
I plan to attend law school to become an international lawyer. Religion is an excellent base for this because I have learned world religious traditions, which tie in so deeply with different modern cultures.
Any advice for prospective students considering a degree in religious studies?
Consider doing a double major or minoring! Supplementing religion will not only help you in your religion degree but help you in the outside world!
Tell us more about yourself- interests, hobbies, etc.
My two biggest hobbies are reading and music. I have been Particularly interested in 20th-century Japanese novels. I have recently gotten into Haruki Murakami, and how his writing describes the mundane in such eloquent and interesting ways. For music, I have recently started learning the guitar, but I routinely play the piano and double bass!
