Sandra Coleman is a GSU62 student who will graduate with her BA this fall. Sandra returned to pursue a degree in Religious Studies after receiving her BS in Business Administration from GSU in 1995. In the following interview, we hear more from Sandra about her experience in the Religious Studies program.
Please introduce yourself.
My name is Sandra Booker Coleman. I graduated from Georgia State University with a BS in Business Administration in 1995. I'm working on my second degree in Religious Studies and plan to graduate this fall. I chose Religious Studies as a degree because I felt it would enable me to become a better Sunday School teacher but it has done much more than that. My being in these Religious Studies classes has truly broadened my perspective of what religion is to me.
What has been your most memorable experience in the religious studies dept at GSU thus far?
My most memorable experience here at GSU in the Religious Studies department has been in meeting Dr. Moultrie, Dr. Bassett, and Dr. Andrew Walker-Cornetta. These instructors made me realize that I need to truly think about the religion I say I believe in, study it, and bring it to the forefront of my life. They did this without knowing they did it.
What is something useful you’ve learned from your time in the BA program in religious studies thus far?
Something that I have truly tried to come to an understanding with is the word "hegemony." I first learned this word in Dr. Moultrie's class and I am still coming to grips with this.
What are your future plans?
I don't know what my future holds in terms of what I will do with my degree in Religious Studies but I hope it will enable me to assist someone positively with their journey in life
Any advice for prospective students considering a degree in religious studies?
What I would tell any future student in Religious Studies is to truly open their minds and really think about the great things they will be learned and how they can be used in a positive manner.
